Festival of Sport, on June 11th is an Olympic Games themed event organised by charity Kids Run Free, and aims to get Leamington active!
As summer and the Rio Olympic Games approach Kids Run Free invites youngsters and their families to join the KRF Festival of Sport that showcases the best sports activity providers in Leamington and surrounding areas at the Pump Room Gardens in Leamington on Saturday 11th June between 10am and 2pm.
Kids Run Free is a national children’s charity based in Leamington Spa with a mission to create fun, sustainable running opportunities for 0-16 year olds, igniting their passion for sport and physical activity and allowing them to become healthier, happier, more confident children. To achieve this, the charity organises free running regular events in parks and green spaces in towns and cities around the UK. They are also the organisers of the popular Kids’ Marathon initiative that runs in primary schools.
The charity’s newest venture, the Festival of Sport, will be packed with displays and activities delivered by local sports and activity providers, which are designed to inspire children to ‘get active’. In addition Kids Run Free is now inviting various sports groups, schools, scouts, brownies as well as families to create teams of 12 children to enter their Kids’ Marathon challenge. All children taking part in this challenge will receive a goodie bag and the much coveted Kids Run Free medal.
2012 London Olympic Torchbearer Peter Frazier who made history in 1981 by becoming the first transplant survivor in the world to run a marathon and who has represented Great Britain 6 times at the World Transplant Games, winning various medals including gold at Athens in 1982 and again at Sidney in 1997; and Owusu Dako GB Sprinter who competed in the 200m and 4x100m relay at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics are two sport personalities that the charity has engaged to attend the event and award the children their medals. Other local personalities have been invited, such as the Mayor of Leamington and Chris White MP.
As Kids Run Free is based in Leamington Spa and it has received much needed support from the town during its 4 years of existence, allowing it to gain national recognition, the Pump Room Gardens was the obvious choice to hold this magnificent event. Various local personalities and businesses have financially and otherwise supported this initiative; amongst these are Chris White MP, Love Leamington, Leamington Round Table, 29th May 1961 Trust, Heart of England Community Fund, Warwickshire Town Council, Warwickshire Association of Youth Clubs and Wright Hassall.
Sarah Perry, Wright Hassall’s Managing Partner, said “We were proud to be the only
Midlands law firm to be on The London 2012 Pro Bono Legal Advice and Representation
Service which provided legal advice to accredited athletes, coaches and team officials
participating in the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. We can’t believe that it is
four years since London and we’re delighted to support Kids Run Free with their legacy
Chris White MP stated: “The Festival of Sport will be an excellent showcase of what is on
offer locally and a great family event. Promoting sport and healthy lifestyles is important and
I pay tribute to Kids Run Free for their work in this area.”
The charity’s Founder CEO, Martine Verweij added “We are so grateful for the support
Leamington businesses and the local community have shown for this event and we know
this will be a day to remember with the support of sportsmen Peter Frazier and Owusu Dako”
The event is open to all ages and the charity is expecting 500 children and their families to
join the festivities. Children will receive a goodie bag and the chance to be part of a unique
experience in the heart of Leamington Spa. To enter a team for the Kids’ Marathon

Kids’ Marathon is an exciting project from children’s charity Kids Run Free. The project aims
to give school children the opportunity to complete a marathon throughout the course of the
school year by running laps of a course once or twice a week during their lunch break. The
concept is based on personal achievement rather than competition - this encourages all
children, regardless of fitness ability to take part by running as much or as little as they
