Memorial to Gary O'Donnell G.M. and Bar

On Sunday, 27th October 2009 Whitnash Town Council unveiled a new memorial on Chapel Green dedicated to Whitnash soldier Sergeant Major Gary O'Donnell. Gary was a bomb disposal expert who was killed in action whilst trying to disable a device in Helmand Province, Afghanistan in September 2008.

Gary's wife, children, family and colleagues were present at a moving ceremony given by Rev. Iain Rennie of the nearby Methodist Church.

The Bar was posthumously added to his George Medal he had already received whilst serving in Iraq in 2006.

Whitnash's War Memorial outside St Margaret's church has been updated. Members of Whitnash's Womens' Institute have for many years maintained the flowers around the memorial and now a new rose bush will be added so that there is one for each name on the memorial.
